Upcoming Event Rice Universitys 11th Annual Environmental Conference will be held on its campus from Feb 28-March 2. The conference will engage participants in the history, philosophy and controversy over publiclands and provide a forum for discussion, hands-on training, skill-sharing, grassroots organizing and community empowerment. There will also be a photography exhibit and documentary film showings. The conference includes a broad spectrum of activities including panels, workshops, local and out-of-state guest speakers and interactive roundtable discussions. Topics will include the trend toward privatization of public lands, extractive industries including mining, logging and livestock, the Wilderness Act, Bush Administration changes to environmental law, grassroots legislation, Texas public-land needs and the states role in national campaigns. Guest speakers include: Doug Hoschek of the Public Access Coalition, Darryl Cherney of the Headwaters Earth First!, Greg Kroll a private wilderness contractor for various federal agencies, Paul Edwards from the Montana Environmental Information Center, Brandt Mannchen from the Houston Sierra Club, and Lawrence Sampson from the South-East Texas American Indian Movement.
