Putting the Earth Back in Earth Day
An Invitation from Alesha Herrera, Houston Earth Day 2002 Chair

Imagine an event that allows Houston residents to learn about and celebrate their local environment, while at the same time taking concrete action to improve it. Imagine an event that showcases local music, dance, art, and cuisine while highlighting the region’s diversity and environmental heritage. Imagine an event that visibly demonstrates environmental stewardship as it teaches it.

The Citizens’ Environmental Coalition proudly announces the creation of a new Earth Day event for the Houston/Gulf Coast region: Houston Earth Day 2002, a day of education, celebration, and action designed to bring the local community together to encourage understanding of and participation in local and global environmental issues.

Houston Earth Day 2002 will be substantially different from the Earth Day events of 1998-2001. After careful consideration and input from our member organizations, CEC is no longer partnering with Enron and KRBE for this event. Instead, CEC will be working with the Rice University Environmental Club to create an environmentally conscious event for the Houston community.

Event: Houston Earth Day 2002
Organizers: CEC and Rice University Environmental Club
Date: Saturday, April 13, 2002
Time: 10 am – 6 pm
Location: Rice University
Cost: Free!

Highlights of the event include displays and demonstrations with an environmental focus, interactive and educational booths by local environmental non-profit groups, performances by local and regional musicians, and opportunities for visitors to take concrete action on behalf of their environment.
