G.R.E.E.N. Gardening Advice

The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. will sponsor a free gardening event on Saturday, September 28. The event, Woodlands Landscaping Solutions will feature garden tours, booths and information on appropriate plant selection, attracting birds and butterflies, restoring habitat, alternatives to toxic fertilizers, beneficial insects, composting and more. Organic products, gardening gifts, native plants and herbs will be on sale. The Houston Chronicle’s "lazy gardener" columnist Brenda Buest Smith will be on hand to answer questions and sign copies of her book, the sale of which benefits Montgomery County’s landscaping project, Master Gardener's Habitat for Humanity. The event will take place from 9 am to 12 pm at 8203 Millennium Forest Dr. in The Woodlands. Call 281.210.3900 for information and directions.

Century of Change

As part of the Houston Museum of Natural Science fall lecture series, Dr. David Schmidly, creator of the museum’s new exhibit, "Century of Change," will speak on Thursday, October 3. An authority on Texas natural history and conservation, his lecture will compare one of the first biological surveys of the state when wildlife species were abundant, to the status of mammals today – many of which are endangered or extinct. The event will begin at 7 pm. His exhibit, which takes a sobering at look at the environmental changes that have shaped Texas throughout the last 100 years, is on display now until January 19. Admission is $8 for museum members and $10 for non-members. For tickets to the lecture, call 713-639-4629 or visit the museum on the web at www.hmns.org.

LOCAL

West Alabama Demonstration

In protest of city plans to divert freeway traffic onto Richmond and West Alabama during the two-year spur closure at Highway 59, activists are planning to demonstrate on Saturday September 28. Organizers claim that plans to remove the tree-lined esplanades from Richmond in favor of more traffic lanes and to put an HOV lane on West Alabama, show disregard for the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists, the accessibility of the disabled and the livability of the neighborhood. All concerned should bring their voices and signs to the corner of West Alabama and Kirby at 4:30 pm for a one mile walk and an 8-10 mile bike ride. The demonstration is sponsored by the West Alabama Quality of Life Coalition, Bike Houston, Walk Houston and Houstonians with Disabilities. For more details contact Ray Jones at 713.529.7887 RayAJones@aol.com or Dan Lundeen at 713.652.2555 dan@bikehouston.org.

Katy Corridor Public Meeting

The Katy Corridor Coalition is hosting a public meeting on Monday, September 30, to share information about, and raise funds for, their fight against the proposed I-10 expansion. There will be time, after the speakers, for questions and open discussion. The meeting will be held at the Spring Branch Education Center, 9016 Westview, at 7 pm. For more details call Polly Ledvina at 713-524-4578.

Sustainability Conference

Environmentalists concerned with the future of Houston’s development will attend a sustainability conference on October 5. Organized by the Houston Sustainability Network, the conference will cover topics like local economics, globalization, ecology, peace, social justice and health. The day long event will begin at 9 am at the Grace Lutheran Church on Waugh. Your $5-$10 donation will help pay for the facility.
