Environmental News Update 8/2/02 COALITION NOTES Urban Harvest/Herpetological Society Launch Websites Two CEC member groups, Urban Harvest and East Texas Herpetological Society, both have launched new websites. Urban Harvests site offers information on the organizations programs, a schedule of classes, and gardening advice. The Herpetological Society pages feature the groups programs and events. You can visit: www.urbanharvest.org and www.eths.org LOCAL Clean Air Car Care Clinic The Houston-Galveston Area Council will sponsor another Clean Air Car Care Clinic on Saturday, Aug 3 from 7 10 am at Space Center Tire, 16439 Moon Rock (off Bay Area Blvd. in Clear Lake area). AAA authorized mechanics will conduct free 28-point maintenance inspections while you wait. John Miller, The Car Counselor, will also be on location and broadcasting live from 6 to 8 am. For more Information, visit: http://www.cleanairaction.org Public Meeting on TPWD Plan The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is inviting the public to comment on their draft Land and Water Resources Conservation and Recreation Plan. A public meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 6 at 7 pm at the Humble Civic Center, 8233 Will Clayton Parkway in Humble. The 10-year plan, which was commissioned by the Texas legislature, outlines TPWDs role, the conservation and recreation needs of different areas, and priorities and strategies for meeting those needs. For more details, visit: www.cechouston.org/newsletter/nl_08-02/parks.html To view the entire draft plan, visit: www.tpwd.state.tx.us/plan Heat Island Mitigation Meeting Cool Houston, a program administered by the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC), will host a Heat Island Mitigation Meeting on August 8 from 1 3 pm at the Houston Galveston Area Council, 3555 Timmons, second floor meeting room. Public Meetings on Bikeway Program Scheduled The City of Houston will conduct six public meetings between August 15 and 29 to bring awareness to the progress and availability of the Houston Bikeway Program. The meeting format will be an open house style; therefore, individuals may attend at any time between the hours of 6 and 8 pm. Exhibits and handouts showing the overall bikeway network, examples of trail and bridge design and trail alignment maps will be displayed at the meeting. Representatives from the City of Houston, Texas Department of Transportation, Harris County Flood Control District, and the design team will be available for individual discussions with participants. A written comment form is available online and may be submitted at the meetings. Participants will review the federal tax and election laws affecting the political activities of nonprofit organizations in an election year, from voter registration to candidates forums. A follow-up training on lobbying will be held on Wednesday, October 9th, from 1 - 4 pm. For more information, contact margot_clarke@lcvef.org.
