Street Festival Canceled

The Endangered Species Media Project Downtown Street Festival: A Tribute to Hendrix, originally scheduled for May 24 – 25, has been cancelled due to logistical problems. For more details, visit: http://www.houstondowntownstreet-festival.com 

Fighting the Freeway, Continued

The Katy Corridor Coalition (KCC), which opposes the expansion of I10, will host a second citizen meeting on Tuesday, June 4 at 7 pm at Memorial High School, 935 Echo Lane, just south of the freeway. Presenters will continue the conversation about the impacts on air quality, health, flooding, and noise that expanding the Katy Freeway would have, as well as strategies for implementing more responsible transportation alternatives. Climate Justice Summit

Activists from around the world will gather for the Climate Justice Summit held during the ExxonMobil Shareholders Meeting in Dallas May 24-29.  Activities will include activist training and protests outside ExxonMobil’s meetings. Why ExxonMobil? Summit organizers cite the multi-national corporation’s efforts to block global actions to address climate change and human rights abuses. Environmental Health Summer Institute

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences center at the University of Texas Medical branch will host an Environmental Health Sciences Summer Institute for K-12 teachers July 15-18. The event will offer a variety of workshops pursuing the connections between health and the environment. Participants will learn how to help students use scientific inquiry to develop an understanding of the mechanisms that affect the environment and our health. The conference will be held at The Thompson Conference Center at the University of Texas in Austin. The application deadline is June 5. Some travel grants are available. Urban Forestry Partnership Grant Program

The Texas Forest Service is offering Urban Forestry Partnership Grants, which are designed to start or improve local urban forestry programs or to educate the public about the importance of urban trees. Grant awards range from $1,000 to $10,000 and must be matched dollar-for-dollar. Funds for hiring a new professional staff position for up to $20,000 do not require matches. The application deadline is July 18. Grants will be awarded in August, with a one-year project timeline starting in October.
