Environmental News Update 2/22/02CEC NOTES Tree Planting Saturday On Saturday, February 23, from 8:30 am to noon, various environmental organizations, including the CEC will be planting one hundred 5-gallon trees in the esplanade on Memorial Drive between Crestwood and the railroad overpass. The Gulf Coast Institute will provide the trees. The City of Houston Forestry Department will continue to water and nurture them to ensure their success. Volunteers are asked to bring their gloves, shovels, picks, rakes, or hand sledges and join in. Drinks and lunch will be provided by Marathon Oil Company. To RSVP to work on CECs plot, contact Carlton Collier at 713-924-6058. COALITION NOTES MfCA Parish Power Plant Tour Mothers for Clean Air will host a tour of the W. A. Parish power plant in Sugarland on Friday, March 15, from 10 am to noon. The Parish plant is Reliant Energys only power plant with coal-fired units. It was listed as the 28th highest emitter of NOx in a national ranking of 1999 power plant emissions. Participants will learn how electricity is generated and what Reliant is doing to reduce its nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions as required by the State Implementation Plan. Due to heightened security measures and the significant ongoing construction activity for the NOx emission reduction projects at the plant, Reliant has limited the type and number of tours they can support. Therefore, the tour is limited to 30 adults; those under 18 years of age cannot be accommodated at this time. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 713-526-0110 or sending a message to mfca@hern.org. Please include the names of the persons in your party, and a contact number. LOCAL Brownfields Workshop Scheduled The Houston Mayor's Office of Environmental Policy is scheduling their 4th Annual Brownfields Redevelopment Workshop for Friday, June 14 from 8 am to 4:45 pm at the George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida de las Americas. For more information, contact Dawn Moses at Dawn.Moses@cityofhouston.net.
