Environmental News Update 7/13/01 COALITION NOTES Sierra Club Attempting to Halt Pearland Parkway Extension At a press conference on July 11, the Sierra Club called on the City of Pearland and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to stop plans to extend the Pearland Parkway, saying the development will destroy ecologically valuable wetlands and worsen Clear Creeks flooding problems. The City of Pearland has applied to the Corps for a permit to fill wetlands to build the road. The Sierra Club is asking people who are concerned about this proposal to contact the Corps by July 15 and urge them to hold a hearing on the issue. Community Workshop on Buffalo Bayou Scheduled A community workshop designed to solicit input regarding Buffalo Bayou beautification and redevelopment will be held Saturday, July 21 from 9 am to 3 pm at the University of Houston-Downtown, One Main Street, Buffalo Bayou Room - Academic Building, 3rd Floor. The meeting is being held as part of a Buffalo Bayou master planning study, sponsored by the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, City of Houston, Harris County, and Harris County Flood Control District. The workshop is the second in a series of meetings that have been scheduled to build consensus for Buffalo Bayou's future. For additional information, call the Buffalo Bayou Partnership at 713-752-0314. Exhibit at Bay Day The Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF) is now getting ready for Bay Day 2001. Bay Day Celebration is an opportunity for non profit organizations to get their word out to 6,000 to 10,000 people. The event will take place on October 20 at Sylvan Beach Park, La Porte from 10 am to dark. There will be free entertainment with Kelly McGuire and Hurricane and Billie B. Children's Environmental Entertainer. Each non profit exhibitor is asked to provide a hands-on learning activity for children and/or adults. There is a $25 booth fee and each group will receive two Bay Day T-shirts with their registration. Please call Nettie Ramsay at Galveston Bay Foundation at 281-332-3381 for more information.> Conservation Conference The Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club will host their fifth annual Conservation Conference on Saturday, June 21 in Dallas. The day-long meeting marks the official launch of the chapters Wide Open Spaces Campaign, a two-year public education initiative designed to increase awareness of habitat loss and the need for open space protection in Texas. Registration cost is $35. For more information, contact Jennifer Walker at 512-477-1729 or scls@igc.org LOCAL QOLC Advocates for Park Funding The Quality of Life Coalition is urging concerned citizens to ask the Mayor, the Controller, and City Council to support the allocation of $130 million in the November bond issue for the citys park plan. Toxic Tours Scheduled Local activists are coordinating several activities around the release of a report on new source review violations by local refineries, expected next week. On July 24, they will host a candlelight vigil at the Pasadena Convention Center, 7902 Fairmont Parkway. On July 25th, Gasoline Alley: Refinery Victims Tour will set off for three days of touring refineries in Houston, Beaumont, Lake Charles, and Norco, Louisiana. After the bus tour, at least five delegates from each impacted community will travel by plane to Washington DC to visit representatives. GREEN JOBS ABNC Volunteer Coordinator and Education Coordinator / Animal Collections Manager The Armand Bayou Nature Center (ABNC) is seeking a part-time, salaried Volunteer Coordinator and a full-time salaried Education Coordinator / Animal Collections Manager. The Volunteer Coordinator would be responsible for recruiting, training, coordinating, and rewarding volunteers. The Education Coordinator / Animal Collections Manager would assist in developing and managing all educational programming at the nature center, as well as care for animals in the live animal collection.
