COALITION NOTES

The Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) Announces Fall Events

On Saturday, October 28th, the KPC will organize a work day at the Nelson Farms Preserve. They are looking for volunteers to paint, weed, haul trash and pull carpet nails from wood floors. Contact the KPC at (713) 523-6135 for more information.

On Friday, November 10th, Bass Pro Shops will host the Conservation Classic Golf Tournament at River Ridge Golf Club, 3133 Brazos Oaks Lane, benefiting the KPC. Registration is $125 per golfer and includes range, golf and cart fees, beverages, lunch, dinner, and a chance to win prizes. The first golfer to sink a hole-in-one will win a new car from Westside Chevrolet; other prizes include golf clubs and gift certificates to Bass Pro Shops. Coalition Members Win Texas Community Forestry Awards

On September 21, the Texas Forest Service, the Texas Urban Forestry Council and the International Society of Arboriculture presented their annual Texas Community Forestry Awards. Several Coalition members were winners, including Kathy Lord, Executive Director of Trees for Houston, who received an Outstanding Professional Award, and the Galveston-Houston Association for Smog Prevention, which received a Civic Award for the publication, Trees & Our Air: The Role of Trees and Other Vegetation in Houston-area Pollution. Another Civic Award was given to Trees for Bellaire, and Oliver Spellman, Director of Houston Parks & Recreation Department took home the Urban Forestry Leadership Award. Public Meeting on Transportation Issues to Be Held

On Tuesday, October 10th, at 6:00 p.m., a Public Meeting on Amendments to the 2000-2002 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and the 2022 Metropolitan Transportation Program (MTP) will be held. Public comment is invited on the proposed programming of 1) Light Rail Transit from the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) campus to Holmes Road, and 2) Bridge replacement and widening of FM 529 from Barker Cypress to one mile west of Barker Cypress. Location: Houston-Galveston Area Council Building, 3555 Timmons Lane Conference Room A, 2nd Floor. Written comments are also welcome until noon on October 19th; they can be faxed to 713-993-4508. Reliant and Lowe's Offer Energy Efficiency Seminars

Reliant Energy is teaming up with Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse to offer free seminars that teach residents how to conserve energy in their homes. Topics include conserving home energy, pool maintenance, building an energy efficient home, and home appliance efficiency. http://www.houind.com/relowes.asp

Press Conference and Demonstration Planned at Governor's Mansion

On Thursday, October 12th at 1:00 p.m., citizens will gather at the governor's mansion in Austin for a news conference and demonstration to announce and celebrate the settlement of the lawsuit that was filed after six protestors were arrested there last year for protesting Governor Bush's support of grandfathered polluters. The recent settlement orders state officials to pay $99,000 and restore the public's right to demonstrate in front of the governor's mansion.
