Mission: In order to improve the quality of life in the Houston Gulf Coast region, the Gulf Coast Institute encourages research and communication about urban issues, and works to find grounds for mutually beneficial collaboration from among leaders working in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

Strategy: In the Houston Gulf Coast region, the Gulf Coast Institute leads and facilitates the quality of life movement known as Smart Growth/Livable Communities. GCI seeks a dynamic economy that revitalizes neighborhoods, protects greenspace, increases mobility choices, improves air and water quality, and encourages safe, comfortable, interesting pedestrian environments.
