Grants of up to $15,000 plus trips to SeaWorld will be awarded to schools and community groups working at the grassroots level to protect and preserve the environment.

Since 1993, SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment has recognized the outstanding efforts of students and teachers across the country who are working at the grassroots level to protect and preserve the environment. The “SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Environmental Excellence Awards” provides school and community groups with a monetary award, national recognition and some well-deserved fun at one of our parks. From the shores of Maine to the California coast, students and adult leaders working on behalf of wildlife and wild places continue to amaze and inspire us.

Eight winning groups are selected each year to win $10,000. One environmental educator/leader each year receives $5,000.

For information about how you, your school or student group could win both money and recognition, call toll-free 1-877-792-4332 or visit http://www.seaworld.org/conservation-matters/eea/

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality announced today that applications will now be accepted for funding to retrofit older school buses in order to reduce harmful air emissions. A total of about $1.7 million is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The funding for this grant round is available from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The Texas Clean School Bus program provides reimbursement to Texas school districts that install pollution-control devices on diesel school buses. These devices reduce particulate-matter emissions that can aggravate respiratory problems, asthma, and allergies in children who ride the buses.

Public school districts and charter schools located in air quality nonattainment and near nonattainment areas in Texas that operate one or more diesel-powered school buses, as well as transportation systems provided by countywide districts, are eligible to be reimbursed for costs of approved retrofits. The application deadline is April 30.
The goal of the Acres for America program is to offset the footprint of Wal-Mart’s domestic facilities on at least an acre-by-acre basis through acquisitions of interest in real property. Endorsement of a proposed acquisition by appropriate federal, state, and local government agencies and by nonprofit organizations that the land is of high conservation value is a primary program consideration. Preference will be given to acquisitions that are part of published conservation plans, State Wildlife Action Plans, or Endangered Species Act Recovery Plans.

Approximately $2.5 million in total funding is available annually through 2014 for conservation investments. All grant awards require a minimum 1:1 match of cash or contributed goods and services.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is sponsoring an environmental justice video contest that challenges professional or aspiring filmmakers to create videos that capture the faces of the environmental justice movement. The Faces of the Grassroots contest is an opportunity to publicly exhibit creativity with environmental justice stories, and connect with others working to raise awareness of the movement.

“Faces of the Grassroots will help EPA expand the conversation on environmentalism and work for environmental justice,” said Charles Lee, director of EPA’s Office of Environmental Justice. “Participants can make a difference for the historically underrepresented in their community by using motion pictures to show the struggles and triumphs they have endured to advance environmental justice.”

Videos can focus on any environmental justice activity, issue, or topic. Examples would be a music video about climate change, or a video recording a successful environmental justice project that has made a community a healthier and happier place to live.

Awards will be given to the winning submissions in each category. The videos will also be featured on EPA’s Web site and may be used as public service announcements. Entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. EST on Thursday, April 8, 2010. EPA will announce winners in honor of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.

Below are the categories and prize money:
