Transition Houston’s August meeting will bring members together to hear about our progress in building individual and community resiliency. We will hold our issues meeting 7-8:30, then adjourn for food and conversation. Transition Initiatives work to build local resiliency–the ability to resist and bounce back from the shocks of peak oil, climate change,or economic disruption. Among the tools we use to build resiliency are relocalization of our food, energy, transportation, and economy, the development of connections and community, and vision/planning for a satisfying, low-carbon future. Transition Houston is a city hub for local neighborhood Transition Initiatives in the greater Houston area. As a direct result of their good management, Spring Branch Ranch was awarded the Lone Star Land Steward Award for the Post Oak Savannah in 2007.

The HMI field day at Spring Branch Ranch on August 14th may be hot, but worth the trip! Hear from the team of biologists and consultants that helped create the current management plan, as well as the triumphs and stumbling blocks along the way. You’ll get tips on how to create your own management plan, including where to start and the resources at your disposal. Small and large landowners alike will be able to apply many of the ideas presented on their land

The Spring Branch Ranch field day is $30. The deadline is August 9th.

This class is the best resource for learning the fundamentals of green building and developing basic knowledge of the LEED rating systems and can be used as part of the eligibility requirements for completing an education program that addresses green building principles. The course also provides an overview of the LEED Green Associate credentialing process, as well as helpful tips and resources for passing the exam. The LEED Green Associate credential is a new designation for 2009, but it is also the first step in obtaining a LEED AP specialization under the new LEED v3. This course will review logistics of taking the exam, including format and content, provide tips on how to prepare for the exam, and provide you with sample exam questions. No course can provide “all the answers to the exam”; in order to pass you will still need to spend additional study time outside this review course to prepare for the exam.

We will have the Houston Green Scene Green Mixer starting at 5:30pm, followed by a screening of Fresh! The Movie.

Houston Green Scene helps Houstonians make good, green choices by being the trusted source and most comprehensive guide of all things local and green, with the overall mission to connect, inform and inspire Houstonians for a greener Houston.

FRESH celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet.

This event is graciously sponsored by Georgia’s Farm to Market, Houston Green Scene and Taft Street Coffee.

Stephanie Soechtig´s debut feature is an unflinching examination of the big business of bottled water. From the producers of ´Who Killed the Electric Car´ and ´I.O.U.S.A.,´ this timely documentary is a behind-the-scenes look into the unregulated and unseen world of an industry that aims to privatize and sell back the one resource that ought never to become a commodity: our water. From the plastic production to the ocean in which so many of these bottles end up, this inspiring documentary trails the path of the bottled water industry and the communities which were the unwitting chips on the table.
