The Mercer Society seeks Herbarium Research Summer Intern

The Mercer Society at Mercer Botanic Gardensis looking to hire a summer intern to conduct herbarium research.

What is a herbarium? It is a collection of pressed, dried and mounted plants and plant parts. These are stored on acid-free paper in climate and pest-controlled cabinets. Mercer Botanic Gardens herbarium, registered as MERCA in Index Herbariorum, a global directory of herbaria and staff, includes plants of east Texas, rare eastern Texas species, permanent sample sites that include Harris County saline prairies, and specimens from Mercer Botanic Gardens living collections. In the spring of 2017, the herbarium collection at Mercer will grow from approximately 5,000 to about 50,000 specimens with the long-term loan of a collection from the Robert Vines Environmental Science Center and Arboretum (Spring Branch Science Center) herbarium, registered as SBSC in Index Herbariorum, an important collection documenting the flora of the Houston metro area and East Texas.

Shell Paid Internship: Hermann Park Reforestation Planning and Volunteer Programs Intern

Priority responsibilities of the  intern will be assisting Hermann Park Conservancy’s (HPC) Conservation Director with aspects of the continuing development of a reforestation plan in Hermann Park. The intern will be responsible for supplementing, updating and expanding HPC’s park tree inventory and database utilizing GPS equipment, including such information as species, size, condition and maintenance needs of each tree. This inventory is essential as the basis for the Conservation Director’s development of a long-term comprehensive tree management plan for Hermann Park. The intern will continue the development of a dynamic map of tree locations and planting spaces in Hermann Park using GIS Arcview 10 software. The intern will edit the existing tree database and map to reflect the tree plantings and tree losses that occurred throughout the year to date. The maps are fluid documents, continually requiring updating due to tree removals and plantings,Park furnishing installations and capital improvements. Phase III of the Park’s Lake Picnic Area is focused on reforestation; the intern will map 270+ newly planted trees as part of Phase III of the project. The intern will GPS locate and GIS map over 1000 new trees planted along Brays Bayou through Hermann Park as part of Harris County Flood Control’s bayou beautification project. The intern will analyze database and mapping information and prepare reports. The intern will research a specific reforestation plan topic and write an addendum to the overall plan based on the research.

Applicants must be returning to college  fulltime in Fall 2014 as sophomore, junior, or senior. Qualifications include familiarity with GPS unites, knowledge of Arcview or other GIS technical software, highly proficient writing and research skills, experience working with children, volunteers, and/or a camps environment. Knowledge of Texas tree species, flora, and local environmental issues is preferable. Must have the ability to work outdoors as well as in an office setting, and have own reliable transportation.
