WALKING TOUR OF ALLEN’S LANDING AREA

The Greater Houston Preservation Alliance and Buffalo Bayou Partnership are hosting a walking tour of the Allen’s Landing area on Sunday, Nov 19. Allen’s Landing is the spot at the confluence of Buffalo and White Oak bayous where Augustus and John Kirby Allen decided to found the city of Houston in 1836; later, it became the site of Houston’s first port and was a center of local cotton transportation. The tour will visit Allen’s Landing and nearby buildings, including the University of Houston Downtown, built as a retail/warehouse complex on the eve of the Great Depression, and the Willow Street Pump Station, once the centerpiece of Houston’s first sewer system. Registration will begin on Sunday at 1:30 pm in Allen’s Landing Park, 1001 Commerce Ave. This tour is free. For more information, call (713) 216-5000 or (713) 752-3014 x 3 or e-mail tsmith@buffalobayou.org.
