EPIC Service Club in Baytown, TX @ Eddie V. Grey Wetlands Education Center

The Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Education Center and the Baytown Nature Center are hosting a free service learning club for high school teens.

Under the supervision of Christina Butcher, Baytown Nature Center Naturalist, and Wetlands Center Education Coordinator, Jina Faith, high school students, who wish to make a difference in the community, make new friends, and/or gain volunteer hours while having fun, meet Wednesday afternoons from 4-5 pm.

Participation in small conservation projects develops teamwork skills and environmental responsibility to enable the students to pick, plan and implement a larger conservation project of their choice.

Baytown Nature Center’s Nurture Nature Series @ Baytown Nature Center
Dec 2 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

The popular program is the first Saturday of each month from 10-noon, with the exception of April. Each month’s program covers a different and unique topic. The program is free with regular admission.

Baytown Nature Center’s Full Moon Hike @ Baytown Nature Center
Dec 2 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

The monthly 90 minute hikes begin just after sunset. Hikers are asked to wear comfortable clothing. Small children should not attend since hikers have a better chance of viewing nocturnal animals in a relatively quiet atmosphere. Routes and start times vary monthly. Meet at the Visitor’s Center unless otherwise stated. Hikes are weather permitting and free with general admission to the nature center.

Admission:

  • Adults (13+) – $4
  • Children (5-12) – $1
  • Seniors (65+) – $1

AIA’s Gingerbread Build-Off @ Hermann Square

Architecture Center Houston will host the 9th Annual Gingerbread Build-Off at City Hall’s Hermann Square Saturday, December 9, 2017. Competing teams will create their masterpieces using 100% edible materials. More than 4,500 spectators are expected to attend and cheer on the teams, play in the kids’ construction zone, and see Santa! All of that entertainment is FREE and open to the public! 

Want to compete?

Team registration is open to local architecture firms, design professionals, students, and enthusiasts seeking the coveted Grand Prix de Show for their edible structure. Additional awards will be given in categories including 1st and 2nd Runner-Up, Best Architectural Icon, Tallest Standing Structure, Best Holiday Themed, Best Non-Holiday Themed, Best Houston-centric, Most Creative Interpretation of Materials, and Public Favorite. Gingerbread buildings will be judged by an independent panel of food, design, art, and architecture professionals.
