2016 Annual STS-AIChE Houston Ship Channel Trip
Jun 11 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
2016 Annual STS-AIChE Houston Ship Channel Trip

Once again, the South Texas Section will journey down the Houston Ship Channel in the fully air-conditioned M/V Sam Houston on the evening of Saturday, June 11.  The M/V Sam Houston will leave the dock at 6:00 PM sharp and return to the dock at approximately 7:30 PM.

The Houston Ship Channel is the largest concentration of chemical industry in the United States with more than 50 chemical processing facilities located along either side providing their products to commerce around the world.  The list of companies that are located along the Houston Ship Channel reads like a who’s who of the chemical process and refining industries.  The ship channel has more than 50% of the nation’s basic petrochemical manufacturing capacity and nearly 50% of the capacity of first stage derivatives – almost three times larger than its closest competitor.

Barbecue and beverages will be served on the trip which is intended to be enjoyed by one and all, so please bring your spouse or significant other.  Lenox Barbecue will again be providing beef, chicken and link sausage barbecue dinners with all the fixings including beans, potato salad, cole slaw, pickles, and lots of jalapenos plus dessert for those who are still hungry.

This year, the STS-AIChE will be charging for the barbecue and the beverages (open bar), and the price is $25 per person.

Since this trip is intended for a technical organization, no children under the age of 16 are allowed.

Because of security requirements, reservations are required for the trip in order to provide a passenger list to the Port of Houston Authority.  Reservations will be accepted online until 2:00 PM, Tuesday, June 7.  When the reservations list is full, a wait-list will be started.  Reservations can be canceled online at any time up to 2:00 PM, Tuesday, June 7, on the STS-AIChE website, which will allow time to notify people on the wait-list and include their names on the passenger list.

February 2017 First Friday Networking Lunch Registration

The “First Friday” networking lunch series is continues into February where the topic is the “Pay-it-Forward Networking Program.”  With the intention to help lead and grow a grassroots volunteer program to assist professionals in transition in Houston, the Pay-it-Forward Networking Program was started with the simple notion of wanting to help and encourage others. Many have supported this initiative, including Brian Cho and Zulfiya Samedova, who will be speaking at February’s lunch.  They will be talking about the program’s mission and its three key opportunities for networking: tours, training, and panels.  The program is primarily for those in transition, but there are ways for those currently employed to become involved as well.

A Short Course

Applications Of Heterogeneous Catalysis

May 1-5, 2017

We are pleased to announce the next presentation of our short course “Applications of Heterogeneous Catalysis” for May 1 – 5, 2017. The course is organized to match the needs of chemists and chemical engineers entering the practice of heterogeneous catalysis. However, it is equally suited to individuals experienced in certain areas but who wish to acquire an overview of the field. We do not emphasize research methodology but concentrate on applications to real problems.

The course has been given sixty-four times in Houston since 1971, fifteen times at various locations in Europe, and adapted many times for in-house courses at major companies. Many companies routinely send their personnel to us for training.
