Houston Audubon in partnership with the Baytown Nature Center is leading a monthly count at the Baytown Nature Center. David Hanson is the leader. The survey is usually conducted on the third Thursday of each month, September through May, and results are posted on eBird. The survey normally begins at 8 AM. Friends of Woodland ParkJason Bonilla will conduct another bird watching adventure in Woodland Park. Meet Friends of Woodland Park in front of the community building, bring your binoculars (optional) and join in for some birding fun on Saturday, October 21, 2017, from 7:30 to 9:00 AM.

Pro-tips: Wear long pants, boots if you have them, and apply mosquito spray.

Bird Banding at the Lake Jackson Sanctuary and offices. The public is invited to join us as we work to collect baseline data on bird populations at our sanctuary. Banding will run from 8:00 am to noon. The banding station is operated by Robert and Kay Lookingbill and is conducted the 3rd Saturday of every month. Please put this on your calendar and do join us when you can. Free of charge and no reservations are necessary. The GCBO Nature Store will be open till noon each banding day.

Houston Geological Society’s Earth Science Week Field Trip @ Panther Creek, Montgomery County Preserve, south of The Woodlands

Houston Geological Society’s 2017 ESW Field Trip is a Free family-friendly outdoor geology field trip.

Come explore geological stream processes with us!  See point bars, cut banks, delta bar deposits, meanders, sediment flow structures and log jams.  Find out what a thalweg is.

Field Trip Leader:  Erik Scott

Wildlife Experts:  Available for plant, bug and bird identification.

This is a WALKING field trip.  There is nothing to collect.  Bring a camera and binoculars for birding.

Services:  No facilities on site.

Native Plant Society of Texas’ Native Landscape Certification Program – Level 3 @ Kleb Woods Nature Preserve

The Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP) is a four-level certification program developed by the Native Plant Society of Texas that teaches the value of including and preserving native plants in landscapes.

Level 1: Introduction to Native Landscapes
Level 2: Design and Development with Native Plants
Level 3: Installation and Maintenance of Native Landscapes
Level 4: Advocating for Our Native Plant Community (to be developed)

Participants must complete Level 1 before attending any other level. Levels 2, 3, and 4 may be taken in any order.

Level 3: Installation and Maintenance of Native Landscapes

The course includes a classroom session and a 2-hour outdoor plant knowledge walk.

  • Visualize the differences between native and non-native landscapes.
  • Comprehend how to install native plants into a landscape, including plant choice, purchase, placement, spacing; bed and soil preparation; how to plant trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses, and seeds; what soils to use; mulching techniques.
  • Understand maintenance requirements, techniques, and maintenance schedules for native: trees, shrubs, palms, yuccas, perennials, grasses, and groundcovers.
  • Become familiar with 45 native Texas plants recommended for your landscape and 5 plants to avoid.

The Native Plant Society (NPSOT) offers two levels of certificates:

  • Completion – attend the full day.
  • Competency – attend the full day and pass a test at the end of the class.

Students graduating with either certificate may progress to another class level.

DIRECTIONS: USE 20303 DRAPER ROAD entrance for a shorter walk to the Nature Center (¼ miles from the parking lot). It is a 1.5-mile walk to the Nature Center if you park at 20605 FM 2920 (Waller-Tomball Rd.) entrance.

DISCOUNT: Levels 2, 3, and 4 (to be developed) are $37 for Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT) members and $52 for all others.

IMPORTANT: Please wear clothing and shoes appropriate for the weather and walking outside for 2 hours. You may also need a bottle of water, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a chair cushion.
