AIA’s Gingerbread Build-Off @ Hermann Square

Architecture Center Houston will host the 9th Annual Gingerbread Build-Off at City Hall’s Hermann Square Saturday, December 9, 2017. Competing teams will create their masterpieces using 100% edible materials. More than 4,500 spectators are expected to attend and cheer on the teams, play in the kids’ construction zone, and see Santa! All of that entertainment is FREE and open to the public! 

Want to compete?

Team registration is open to local architecture firms, design professionals, students, and enthusiasts seeking the coveted Grand Prix de Show for their edible structure. Additional awards will be given in categories including 1st and 2nd Runner-Up, Best Architectural Icon, Tallest Standing Structure, Best Holiday Themed, Best Non-Holiday Themed, Best Houston-centric, Most Creative Interpretation of Materials, and Public Favorite. Gingerbread buildings will be judged by an independent panel of food, design, art, and architecture professionals.

November 18 – A Morning with Karen Man

Karen is an entrepreneur, author, and baker that co-founded Oxheart Restaurant and Public Services Bar. She currently serves as OKRA Charity Saloon’s Administrative Director where they are on pace to reach $1 million dollars donated this fall and is finishing up her 200-hour yoga teacher training at Pralaya Yoga Studio in Houston. When she isn’t spending time in a kitchen, she enjoys hiking, reading under the trees at Menil Park, and taking ceramics classes.

Introduction to Composting will explore the fundamental principles of composting, the purpose of compost in your garden, and how to set up a compost system that is right for your garden. We will cover methods such as sheet composting, tumblers, vermicompost, black fly compost, bokashi, and windrow composting.

March 3, 2018 – Basics of Successful Vegetable Gardening with Rebecca Verm

Introduction to the basics of growing vegetables in the Gulf Coast region. Some of the topics covered include growing seasons, climate, best-growing methods & mediums, and specific crop recommendations. We will explore each of these principles, and how they are implemented, in Blackwood’s Kitchen Garden. Students will leave empowered to begin their own backyard garden successfully.
