Exploration Green Conservancy’s Planting Event @ Exploration Green in Clear Lake City
Nov 25 @ 8:00 am – 12:00 pm

Wetland planting on the Habitat Island at Exploration Green in Clear Lake City, led by the Texas Community Watershed Partners/Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. Come work off Thanksgiving’s pumpkin pie a la mode and have some fun outdoors. The new wetlands on the island, situated in Exploration Green’s first lake, will create a refuge for migratory birds and waterbirds. Exploration Green Conservancy and project partners are redeveloping the former Clear Lake City golf course into a state of the art stormwater detention and recreation area.  For more information and registration, visit https://explorationgreen.eventbrite.com.

All About Central City Co-Op

In September 2001, Jennifer Georgantas and Pat Greer dreamed of a community of people joining together each week around healthy, earth-friendly food. This dream became a reality 15 years ago with the founding of Central City Co-Op, Houston’s very first organic co-op.

Organic Produce, Organic Community
Our mission is to support sustainable, chemical free farming practices through offering both 1) sustainably raised local and 2) certified USDA organic national produce and farm goods to our community at the fairest prices possible.

Everything we carry on our shelves and stock in our shares is either locally, sustainably grown by farmers we know or is nationally-certified USDA organic. Both are great options for you and for our planet!

Central City Co-Op also provides a space for individuals to come together as a community. We support every member of our community in their journey to learn more about where their food comes from, how it’s produced, and how the local economy is impacted by food choices.

In short, we make our best effort to feature produce from local sources that embrace compassionate and chemical-free growing—and the little that isn’t local is still nationally-certified USDA organic. We believe everyone should have access to organic produce at reasonable prices.

Nov 29 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

The Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Education Center and the Baytown Nature Center are hosting a free service learning club for high school teens.

Under the supervision of Christina Butcher, Baytown Nature Center Naturalist, and Wetlands Center Education Coordinator, Jina Faith, high school students, who wish to make a difference in the community, make new friends, and/or gain volunteer hours while having fun, meet Wednesday afternoons from 4-5 pm.

Participation in small conservation projects develops teamwork skills and environmental responsibility to enable the students to pick, plan and implement a larger conservation project of their choice.

For additional information, contact: Jina.Faith@baytown.org or phone 281-420-7140 or Christina.Butcher@baytown.org or phone 281-420-7130.

Stormwater Wetland Program Volunteer Opportunity

The Texas Coastal Watershed Program holds weekly volunteer days for their stormwater wetland program, 9am-12pm on Thursdays. Volunteers help propagate plants in the wetland plant nursery at Exploration Green in Clear Lake City, or at the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory in Lake Jackson.  The stormwater wetland program is developing demonstration projects to show  how wetlands can be designed into flood control basins to clean contaminants from surface runoff,  protect our bayous and bays, and provide a refuge for wildlife. A schedule and more information is available by contacting Mcedwards@tamu.edu.

Join us for some light fall gardening on the first Monday of the month and help us care for the park. We’ll be removing some invasive species, growing out & planting natives, watering recently planted plants and more.

  • No experience necessary. Experienced staff will work with you & guide you through the projects.
  • Come dressed for the weather and prepared to get dirty.
  • Bring your own gloves and gardening gear or use ours.

If you are interested in volunteer gardening, but cannot make it on the 1st Monday morning of the month, contact Mary Ann. She can probably use your help on another day!
