All About Central City Co-Op

In September 2001, Jennifer Georgantas and Pat Greer dreamed of a community of people joining together each week around healthy, earth-friendly food. This dream became a reality 15 years ago with the founding of Central City Co-Op, Houston’s very first organic co-op.

Organic Produce, Organic Community
Our mission is to support sustainable, chemical free farming practices through offering both 1) sustainably raised local and 2) certified USDA organic national produce and farm goods to our community at the fairest prices possible.

Everything we carry on our shelves and stock in our shares is either locally, sustainably grown by farmers we know or is nationally-certified USDA organic. Both are great options for you and for our planet!

Central City Co-Op also provides a space for individuals to come together as a community. We support every member of our community in their journey to learn more about where their food comes from, how it’s produced, and how the local economy is impacted by food choices.

In short, we make our best effort to feature produce from local sources that embrace compassionate and chemical-free growing—and the little that isn’t local is still nationally-certified USDA organic. We believe everyone should have access to organic produce at reasonable prices.

Houston Audubon November Speaker Event: The Genius of Birds @ Matchbox 4
Nov 9 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

For decades, people have written off birds as largely witless, driven solely by instinct, and their brains as primitive, capable of only the simplest mental processes.  But it is not so. Jennifer Ackerman, and her book “The Genius of Birds” explores the new view of birds as “thinkers”—cunning, playful, witty, greedy, cranky, joyful, competitive.  She looks at the intelligence of birds within the context of easily observed behavior in our own surroundings and brings to it the latest science from lab and field. Join the Houston Audubon for an interesting presentation from Jennifer Ackerman about birds and their amazing intelligence.

Houston Audubon has partnered with Blue Willow Bookshop for this event. Pre-order your copy of the Genius of Birds with Blue Willow though this link: http://www.bluewillowbookshop.com/event/houston-audubon-event-jennifer-a… or purchase your book at the event. 15% of all book sales will be donated to Houston Audubon and there will be a book signing after the presentation. Although this is a free event, seating is limited so get your tickets online.
