2017 People and Nature Speaker Series @ Museum of Fine Arts - Brown Auditorium
Oct 24 @ 6:00 am – 8:30 am

The Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) is a nonprofit research hub that works with partners to find solutions to problems by balancing environmental protection, economic well- being, and social equity. HARC’s People & Nature Speaker Series brings nationally recognized experts and the public together to talk openly from multiple viewpoints about issues facing our growing region. The primary goal of such a program is to stimulate discussion and understanding, and inspire action and cooperation among our region’s leaders and community members.

On Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts (Brown Auditorium), HARC will continue its People & Nature Speaker Series featuring an evening with Bill Ritter, Jr., 41st Governor of Colorado and the founder of the Center for the New Energy Economy at Colorado State University. Governor Ritter will discuss his book, Powering Forward – What Everyone Should Know About America’s Energy Revolution, examining the future of fossil fuels and renewable energy. Make sure to join HARC and Governor Ritter for a thought-provoking and engaging discussion of climate change and the future of the energy industry in the Houston region. For more on the presentation and to purchase tickets, please RSVP online.

Pliable: Rice Design Alliance and Rice Architecture Fall 2017 Lecture Series @ The MATCH
Oct 25 @ 7:00 pm
Pliable: Rice Design Alliance and Rice Architecture Fall 2017 Lecture Series @ The MATCH | Houston | Texas | United States

The Pliable series features three internationally renowned practitioners who advocate for the immediacy of material investigations and fabrication in architecture, whether low-tech or high-tech, analog or digital. Through their research and design, all three offer up nimble responses to unforeseen material and fabrication challenges and opportunities. On the surface, these three designers are linked by their innovative work with textiles. Upon closer examination, they are reshaping contemporary practice in compelling, provocative ways through material-based research and with repercussions for all design fields.

Houston Audubon November Speaker Event: The Genius of Birds @ Matchbox 4
Nov 9 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

For decades, people have written off birds as largely witless, driven solely by instinct, and their brains as primitive, capable of only the simplest mental processes.  But it is not so. Jennifer Ackerman, and her book “The Genius of Birds” explores the new view of birds as “thinkers”—cunning, playful, witty, greedy, cranky, joyful, competitive.  She looks at the intelligence of birds within the context of easily observed behavior in our own surroundings and brings to it the latest science from lab and field. Join the Houston Audubon for an interesting presentation from Jennifer Ackerman about birds and their amazing intelligence.

Houston Audubon has partnered with Blue Willow Bookshop for this event. Pre-order your copy of the Genius of Birds with Blue Willow though this link: http://www.bluewillowbookshop.com/event/houston-audubon-event-jennifer-a… or purchase your book at the event. 15% of all book sales will be donated to Houston Audubon and there will be a book signing after the presentation. Although this is a free event, seating is limited so get your tickets online.
