2017 Christmas Bird Count @ Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
Dec 31 @ 6:00 am – 12:00 pm

Every winter, tens of thousands of volunteers across North America wake up at the crack of dawn and brave winter weather just to get a headcount of local birds. The Christmas Bird Count is a 118 year old tradition and the longest running citizen scientist project in the world. The count, run by the National Audubon Society, helps biologists study the long-term health and well-being of bird species across the continent.
Join us for this year’s Buffalo Bayou (west Houston) Count on Sunday, December 31. The count starts at 6 am, but we’ll head back to the building at 9 am so late risers can join in on the fun. No experience necessary, but preregistration is required.

Register for the 2017 Christmas Bird Count

Schedule: Bring your own snacks, camera, notebook, weather-appropriate clothing, binoculars if you have them (we’ll have some available to borrow), and money for lunch. At 6:15 am we’ll head straight to the Meadow, then split up to cover the trails. We’ll meet back at the building at 9:00 am for a coffee break. We’ll split up again to cover any remaining trails, then meet back at the building at noon. Afterwards, we’ll head to an optional lunch at Beck’s Prime in Memorial Park to compile our results.

Second Saturday Bird Walks @ Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
Jan 13 @ 8:00 am – 10:00 am

Free to attend, donations appreciated.

Work on your bird watching skills while helping the Arboretum monitor bird populations on a fun, relaxed morning walk. Join us on the second Saturday of each month at the front door of the building for a two-hour bird walk led by Kelsey Low, a resident bird enthusiast. We welcome all levels of bird watching skill and all ages (as long as you’re quiet) – but no dogs, please! If you have binoculars of your own, please bring them.
