At the January web meeting, we welcome Jaime Gonzalez, Community Conservation Director, Katy Prairie Conservancy, who will address Caring for the Plants that Care for Us.

He will discuss the importance of native plants for biodiversity, water absorption, carbon sequestration, the economy, and creating a sense of place.  He will link the well-being of ecosystems to human well-being. Jaime will also discuss the work of Katy Prairie Conservancy to restore native prairie, “re-wild” Houston with pocket prairies, offer citizen conservation opportunities and a new initiative to encourage residents to plant the “nine natives” in their yards. Jaime will give details on using these native plantings on your property, will provide resources and outlets for getting native plants, and will even delve into the ethics of saving wildlife by providing native plant habitat. After his talk, there will be time for Q&A to answer your native plant questions.

A generous donor has pledged a donation to the Katy Prairie Conservancy if at least 10 people sign up for and attend Jaime’s talk.  Please register for this talk, and you will receive an invitation to the web meeting.  Contact Lisa Brenskelle at [email protected] with any questions.

Religion vs. Science: What Religious People Really Think @ Fondren Library, 4th Floor Kyle Morrow Room at Rice University
Jan 30 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Join authors Elaine Howard Ecklund and Christopher P. Scheitle for the release of their book, Religion vs. Science: What Religious People Really Think (Oxford University Press 2017) for an event sponsored by the Religion and Public Life Program with support from the Program in Jewish Studies at Rice University.

Religion vs. Science is based on a five-year study of religious Americans’ views of science, called the Religious Understandings of Science (RUS) study. The RUS study surveyed 10,000 Americans about their views on the relationship between religion and science, as well as specific scientific issues such as stem cell research, evolution and creation, science education, and others. The survey was in addition to more than 300 in-person interviews.  Pastor Lee Hsia of Houston’s First Baptist Church and Rabbi Geoff Mitelman of Sinai and Synapses will moderate the conversation and provide unique perspectives on the book’s content.

RSVP required and will be announced on the website shortly prior to the event.

Vegan Society of P.E.A.C.E. Monthly Meeting @ Houston Community College Conference Center
Feb 10 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Join Vegan Society of P.E.A.C.E. for our “Vegan 2nd Saturdays” Monthly Meetings, Presentations & Vegan Potlucks

Held on the “2nd Saturdays” of each month, we will enjoy a delicious vegan potluck and meeting, along with a discussion, film screening, food demo or speaker presentation on intersectional issues of veganism, animal rights, environmentalism, nonviolence, health and more. Each month will be something new! Our new venue is at the HCC Conference Center.

We are asking for a donation of $5 per person to help cover our facility rental expenses. All attendees must bring a vegan entree to share at the potluck (serving size to feed 10 people)!

There will be VSOP logo items available as part of our fundraising efforts. We always have plenty of FREE vegan literature, animal rights & environmental awareness literature, and starter guides for the vegan-curious, too!

Please remember to bring a vegan dish to share with the group! Our events are always vegan, so please only vegan or raw vegan foods (no animal-derived ingredients). If you have questions on ingredients, feel free to contact us.

We have plenty of seating at our new venue. All ages welcome! (Families are invited to bring toys and games for their young ones. Children must not be left unattended.)

Help us also keep our events earth-friendly by bringing your own reusable dinnerware and plates.

This is a great way to meet up with Vegan Society of P.E.A.C.E. each month and learn about our volunteer opportunities, upcoming events and outreach! Houston’s Premier vegan nonprofit was founded in 2004 and is run entirely by volunteers!

We will also feature a new discussion topic on intersectional issues each month, such as: animal rights, ethical vegan living, vegan health & nutrition, cooking, world hunger solutions, eco-friendly living, nonviolence and more! Some months will also include film screenings and/or guest speakers and food demos.

Houston Community College Conference Center is located at 3100 Main St, 3rd Floor, Houston, TX 77002. See below for map. Free Parking is available on level 7 & 8 of the HCC Administration parking garage at Main & Elgin. Use elevator from parking garage to 3rd floor breezeway, which leads to the Conference suites.
