CoHousing Houston’s Getting It Built Workshop @ Central location near Montrose

This is an intensive two-day workshop led by Katie McCamant and Chuck Durrett, the architect team who brought cohousing to the U.S. McCamant and Durrett have designed, developed, and/or consulted on over 50 cohousing communities.

The workshop will focus on best-practices and hands-on lessons. It will also assist the Houston CoHousing group take their planning to the next level.

PRICING

Individuals $400
+ $200 for each additional household member

Monthly Solar Energy System Workshop @ TXRX

This free workshop addresses the basics on how to install and operate a solar system.  It covers topics such as solar array types, costs of equipment and labor, permitting, energy savings, and reliability.  The instructor Bill Swann is an expert in solar energy and has built many of his own solar systems.  This workshop is ideal for all people as Bill can answer the simplest and most technical of questions.  If you want to learn more about solar, this is the workshop for you. This is a free, public workshop. BikeHouston’s The Bayou Ride @ Niko Niko's

BikeHouston Advisory Board Member Michael Skelly leads a slower, educational ride on the first Sunday of every month departing from Market Square (by NikoNiko’s) at 8 am (unless otherwise stated). This is a no drop ride designed to show riders where they can ride on Houston’s Bayous. It is usually 60 percent on paved surfaces.

Pace and Duration

Moderate, with stops to discuss how Houston is evolving and what is coming, for 2-3 hours.

Recommendations

Fatter tires are highly recommended, but some folks can tough it out on road bikes.

Remember to bring a helmet, water, and spare tubes.

Nature Explore Educator Workshops @ Mercer Botanic Gardens

Two workshops are available on Saturday, December 9, 2017. One workshop is $40; register for both workshops to receive a $5 discount.   • Moving to Learn. 9:00 AM to noonDiscover effective techniques for providing indoor and outdoor movement activities that help children develop body control, gain knowledge about the world and enjoy an outlet for emotional expression.
  • Heart-Centered Teaching. 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Heart-centered teaching begins with an appreciation for the wonders of the world, the people around us and ourselves. It honors individual gifts and helps children learn authentically. Discover a set of tools for cultivating a more joyful approach to teaching.

AIA’s Gingerbread Build-Off @ Hermann Square

Architecture Center Houston will host the 9th Annual Gingerbread Build-Off at City Hall’s Hermann Square Saturday, December 9, 2017. Competing teams will create their masterpieces using 100% edible materials. More than 4,500 spectators are expected to attend and cheer on the teams, play in the kids’ construction zone, and see Santa! All of that entertainment is FREE and open to the public! 

Want to compete?

Team registration is open to local architecture firms, design professionals, students, and enthusiasts seeking the coveted Grand Prix de Show for their edible structure. Additional awards will be given in categories including 1st and 2nd Runner-Up, Best Architectural Icon, Tallest Standing Structure, Best Holiday Themed, Best Non-Holiday Themed, Best Houston-centric, Most Creative Interpretation of Materials, and Public Favorite. Gingerbread buildings will be judged by an independent panel of food, design, art, and architecture professionals.
