Tyke Hikes @ Houston Arboretum & Nature Center

Encourage your child’s curiosity about nature and spend time with them exploring outdoors!

Children 18 months to 3 years, with their adult companions, can join a naturalist for a story reading, a simple nature activity or craft, and a stroller-friendly hike on the beautiful Arboretum trails. Enjoy an interesting new nature experience each week with themes such as bats, raccoons, owls, and trees.

Cost per class: Free for Family Tree Members and above (please have member card on hand); $7 per child for nonmembers (younger siblings are welcome for free). Pay at the door, advanced registration not necessary.

Please note – as of January 2017, Tyke Hikes are $7 per child for nonmembers.

Note: Please dress for the weather. Tyke Hikes take place rain or shine! Closed-toe shoes are best for trail hikes. Older preschoolers are welcome but are the responsibility of the adult companion.

Every Tuesday. Join volunteers to help with the ongoing restoration of historic tall grass prairie. Activities include separating and potting rescued grasses, planting mature grasses and collecting seed. No training necessary. Held at Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center, 14140 Garrett Road, Houston, Texas 77044.

Nature Discovery Center’s “Curious Kids” Fall Classes @ Nature Discovery Center

Preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) and their parents or adult caregivers learn basic science concepts in hands-on classes that encourage and celebrate natural curiosity! Curious Kids lessons incorporate live animals, plants, natural objects, crafts, puppets, stories, and nature walks. Sign up for individual classes or for the semester at a discount.

Are you raising a Curious Kid? We’ll explore, ask, discover, experiment, and more in our pre-K science program! Our children’s programs feature science-rich, weekly, stand-alone classes that offer you the flexibility to sign-up for individual classes that meet your hectic schedules or for specific topics that inspire your children.

 

Cost per class:
  • Members – $15
  • Nonmembers – $20

Rice University Farmers Market @ Rice University

Image result for Rice University Farmers MarketThe Rice Farmers Market is open every Tuesday, rain or shine, from 3:30 PM until 6:30 PM at Entrance 13B off of 5600 Greenbriar Dr. Parking is free. The Rice University Farmers Market supports activities, goods and services that promote community education about the benefits of eating fresh, locally produced food. No cash? Not a problem. EPIC Service Club in Baytown, TX @ Eddie V. Grey Wetlands Education Center

The Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Education Center and the Baytown Nature Center are hosting a free service learning club for high school teens.

Under the supervision of Christina Butcher, Baytown Nature Center Naturalist, and Wetlands Center Education Coordinator, Jina Faith, high school students, who wish to make a difference in the community, make new friends, and/or gain volunteer hours while having fun, meet Wednesday afternoons from 4-5 pm.

Participation in small conservation projects develops teamwork skills and environmental responsibility to enable the students to pick, plan and implement a larger conservation project of their choice.

Nature Story Time is held every Wednesday at 4 PM.

Get absorbed in our stories, puppets, specimens, songs and more! Nature Story Time is primarily for preschoolers and their caregivers.

This is a FREE, drop-in program.

As a courtesy, please call the Center to let us know if you are coming with a group of 6 or more so that we can be sure to have enough materials on hand for everyone.

Stormwater Wetland Program Volunteer Opportunity

The Texas Coastal Watershed Program holds weekly volunteer days for their stormwater wetland program, 9am-12pm on Thursdays. Volunteers help propagate plants in the wetland plant nursery at Exploration Green in Clear Lake City, or at the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory in Lake Jackson.  The stormwater wetland program is developing demonstration projects to show  how wetlands can be designed into flood control basins to clean contaminants from surface runoff,  protect our bayous and bays, and provide a refuge for wildlife. Our Junior Scientists (ages 6 to 10) explore the natural world and examine a variety of science themes through hands-on investigations and experiments and in lessons enriched with crafts, games, and more!
