Native Prairies Association of Texas seeks Environmental Education Coordinator

The Native Prairies Association of Texas (NPAT) is a non-profit land trust that is seeking an experienced science or environmental educator to develop an educational program including activities and curriculum for Lawther Deer Park Prairie, a prairie nature preserve located in Deer Park, Texas. Development of student activities, a program to train teachers to teach the prairie and facilitation of a partnership with local school districts, businesses and other NGO’s including the greater Houston area will be required. The development of grassland biome curriculum to include demonstration trunks and activities to be taken to local schools for presentation to classes will be required. The ability to work with school district personnel in planning school presentation activities and logistics to facilitate use of the preserve is needed. The position may also require working with universities that are interested in planning programs and research projects at the prairie preserve. The educator would also develop and implement a plan to offer prairie education opportunities to non-public school groups like boy scouts, girl scouts and private schools. The position may also require interaction with city officials, chamber of commerce and local newspapers to promote the on-site education program. The educator will also need to coordinate with maintenance volunteers and managers of the prairie site to ensure appropriate and timely maintenance activities that do not interfere with each other.

Job Requirements:

  • Experienced Teacher with Texas Certification in Science Education
  • Experience with Environmental Education for Development and Implementation of Education Program for a Nature Preserve
  • Must be flexible and have the ability to work in a variety of settings including outdoors
  • Must be able to work independently, be creative in problem solving and have the ability to work collaboratively to achieve goals
  • Must have highly developed communication skills
