Local residents will have opportunities for long-term engagement on the project. Highland bayou and its tributaries are listed by the State of Texas for high bacteria levels and low oxygen levels. Description: Please join CHILDREN AT RISK and our community partners for the second annual math and science education policy luncheon, “Inquiring Minds: Attracting Underrepresented Students to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.” This event will bring together educators and local leaders to discuss practical, action-oriented techniques for encouraging and enhancing K-12 STEM education. Particular emphasis will be placed on techniques that can be used to encourage girls and other underrepresented groups to become enthusiastically involved in STEM subjects. This event will feature a keynote address from former Hampshire College president Greg Prince regarding creative ways to spark kids’ interest in STEM; two panel discussions involving classroom and community experts; and an awards ceremony where local high schools that excel in math and science education will be recognized by CHILDREN AT RISK and El Paso Corporation.

Description: New volunteers are needed at local Audubon nature sanctuaries!
An overview of the opportunities for volunteers will be given, including activities such as:
– restoring habitat at Houston Audubon sanctuaries
– assisting visitors at the High Island spring migration kiosk
– helping with nature education programs for children and adults
– maintaining sanctuary trails, grounds, and gardens
– staffing festival booths
– doing office tasks
– working on galas and other special events
Volunteers can choose the activities that best fit their interests, skills, and schedule, with time commitments as little as 2 hours per month. The orientation program is free but registration is required: visit www.houstonaudubon.org or call 713-932-1639 for registration or more information.
