  1. Nature reveals a better way to battle erosion (Matthew Tresaugue – Houston Chronicle, 06/19/2011)
The Galveston Bay Foundation has been creating “living shorelines” to better prevent erosion. Living shorelines involve sloping the land toward the water’s edge and growing marsh grasses and native plants. This method should prevent land loss better than using concrete or boulders. The Galveston Bay Foundation has already created nine living shorelines, with two more in the planning stages.

  2. Houston breaks daily water usage record (Gabe Gutierrez – KHOU 11 News, 06/15/2011)
The average amount of water that Houston typically uses during the summer is 450 million gallons a day. This has been a very dry summer, and last Tuesday, the city used 604 gallons. The mayor does not believe there is need for mandatory water rationing, but she is encouraging citizens to think about how they are using water.

  3. Texans join nationwide effort to reduce CO2 under “Public Trust Doctrine” (Bill Dawson – Texas Climate News, 06/15/2011)
A citizens’ petition is asking the TCEQ to adopt a plan to reduce emissions of climate-changing carbon dioxide from the use of fossil fuels. This is part of the nation-wide initiative. There is a high likelihood that petition will be rejected, but its purpose is to keep the issue alive.
