Description: Chambers County is rich in the natural resources that are attractive to nature tourists. Is the county ready to take advantage of this fast growing sector of the tourism industry? What is needed to better position the county for growth in this arena?

“Opportunities and Challenges for Nature-based Tourism in Chambers County” will be the topic at the first Annual Meeting of the Chambers Recovery Team (“ChaRT”), to be held on the evening of May 26 at the new Visitor Center of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service., beginning at 5:30 p.m. with a reception and opportunities to explore the new U.S. Fish & Wildlife Visitor Center, 4017 FM 563, Anahuac. The speaker will be Miles Phillips, Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University and Extension Specialist for AgriLife Extension.

Description: Prairie Dogs – Thereʼs nothing more thrilling, or wild, than hearing the howling or yipping of a wild dog! The Katy Prairie is home to several cousins of the family pet, including coyotes and two types of foxes. It was also once home to the red wolves.

Experience life as a wild dog by trying to sniff out prey, find your place in your “wolf pack”, and even discover why a wet nose is better than a dry one!

Big Thicket Mushroom Walk

Description: A Mushroom Walk will be held in the Big Thicket National Preserve (BTNP) on Saturday, June 11, 2011. Participants, led by guides of the Gulf States Mycological Society (GSMS), will meet at 10:00 AM at the Big Thicket Field Research Station (FRS) located in Saratoga, Texas. The FRS is on the west side of FM 770 in the small town. It is marked with a brown, Park Service sign.

The group will foray into the nearby Lance Rosier Unit of the BTNP, near the Cypress Swamp on Teel Road, and collect and record species. This activity is part of the BTNP All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI). The collections will be displayed, identified, and dried for deposit in an herbarium. This is an opportunity for the Society to contribute to the ATBI.
