  1. EarthShare Week. This week is Earthshare Week from September 18th to the 26th. This is the kick-off of the fall workplace giving campaign season.   2. DEA Drug Take Back Day. The federal Drug Enforcement Administration is holding a drug take-back day September 25. Many people throw away old drugs or flush them down the toilet, which is bad for the environment. The drive will help give people a safe way to get rid of their drugs.   3. 2011 Texas Environmental Excellence Awards. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2011 Texas Environmental Excellence Awards, the state’s highest environmental honor. These annual awards recognize achievements across Texas that significantly reduce waste, conserve natural resources, and prevent pollution. Deadline for applications is Oct. 8.

  1. Air On Tap. Air On Tap  is a party for our planet to heighten awareness of Houston’s air quality while reminding each of us to decrease our individual footprint and improve the health and nature of our great city. Guests will enjoy delectable cuisine from some of Houston’s favorite restaurants, an array of Saint Arnold beer and other beverages, live music, and a truly heady experience, a one-of-a-kind oxygen bar complete with five different aromas to choose from. Tickets are $25.   2. Adopt a Beach. There will be a beach cleanup along the Texas coast. Volunteers can just show up on the day of the cleanup, dressed comfortably.     Since Hurricane Ike destroyed the Texas City Dike two years ago, a variety of birds, including hundreds of black skimmers, have settled in the area. There is concern about this population as the city prepares to re-open the dike. Since skimmers prefer open ground for nesting, they chose the dike after many high tides in the spring took out their previous nesting areas.
