Green buildings provide benefits to occupants, what about Green benefits to neighborhoods where buildings reside?

Houston Tomorrow envisions each neighborhood as a small town, and our hundreds of neighborhoods as somewhat self-contained, self-sufficient places with a diverse set of characteristics. How can this be allowed and encouraged to happen, focusing on the 65 neighborhoods soon to have light rail service?

The Houston-Galveston Area Council has established a program, Livable Centers, to facilitate planning and implementation projects that will create mixed use, walkable places at various scales, with a presentation describing how transit-connected network of neighborhood, town and urban centers can encourage sustainable mobility for the region.

The City of Houston Planning & Development Department utilizes the development code ordinances such as Chapter 42 to act as the DNA of our built environment. Recent amendments and additions, such as the Transit Corridor Ordinance, are making it easier to accomplish the kinds of projects that advance sustainable design. Planning partners with decision makers and the community to balance a spectrum of needs and interests while addressing the dynamics of growth and change.
