Kleenwood: 6th Annual Keep Kingwood Kleen

Posted on Wednesday 27 January 2010

Title: Kleenwood: 6th Annual Keep Kingwood Kleen
Location: Your community pool in Kingwood
Link out: Click here
Description: You are invited to Keep Kingwood Kleen! The 6th annual Kleenwood event is being sponsored by the Kingwood Chamber of Commerce. According to the Chamber web site, if you wish to participate, you are asked to meet at 9 AM at your community pool. (http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1292361279999) Make it a family event if you wish! There will be a team captain at the pool to assign you to an area to pick up litter or if there is not a team leader there, just head down the trails and into the public spaces and pick up all the litter you can find. If you carry two trash bags, you can put cans and plastic in one for recycling and one for just plain trash. Good shoes and a good pair of glooves are always a good idea at Kleenwood.

After you have cleaned up all the trash that uncaring folks have spilled in our neighborhood you are invited to a celebration at Town Center just after noon. There will be refreshments, entertainment for all and prizes for those who collect and turn in the most outrageous trash found during the event.

While at Town Center, look for the Keep Kingwood Green table with volunteers handing out our latest recycling flier. They, too, can answer all your questions about recycling. And, of course, please place your recyclables in the container provided there.

Finally, if you are an ExxonMobil employee, family member, or retiree, consider donating your work time for Kleenwood that day to Keep Kingwood Green so the organization can obtain a VIP team grant for your efforts. It costs you nothing and will help Keep Kingwood Green with efforts to improve recycling in our community. Stop by the table at Town Center or e-mail your VIP information to Hal@keepkingwoodgreen.org.

Description: The Houston-Galveston Area Council invites area citizens, business leaders, community stakeholders and local officials to attend and voice their opinions and ideas regarding a Transportation-Land Use Vision for the East Port area, which includes 257 sq. miles.

The public is encouraged to attend either of these two workshops and to work with regional planners to develop and evaluate future growth concepts and make comments.

The goal of H-GAC’s Subregional Planning Initiative (SPI) Program is to enable the Houston-Galveston region and its local communities to continue successes in protecting economic vitality, transportation assets, environmentally sensitive areas, green space and quality communities that attract new people and businesses to the region.

The East Port Plan study area includes the cities of Baytown, Clear Lake Shores, Deer Park, Galena Park, Jacinto City, Kemah, La Porte, League City, Morgan’s Point, Pasadena, Seabrook, Shoreacres, South Houston, Webster, and unincorporated areas of Harris and Chambers counties.

Workshop #1: TUESDAY, February 2, 2010, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.

Press Event at Hearing on Proposed New EPA Ozone Limits

Posted on Monday 25 January 2010

Title: Press Event at Hearing on Proposed New EPA Ozone Limits
Location: Hobby Hilton, Houston, Texas (exact room tba) 8181 Airport Boulevard, Houston, TX 77061
Description: American Lung Association, Health Professionals for Clean Air, Sierra Club, Environmental Defense Fund, Galveston-Houston Association for the Prevention of Smog, Public Citizen, and Environment Texas are hosting a press event to endorse Proposed Ozone Rule at EPA Hearing.

The press event is at 11 AM. A second rally will be at 7 pm.

Houston ranks in every list as one of the smoggiest cities in the U.S., with millions of our neighbors and families suffering from that burden every year. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced their proposal to strengthen the official limits—called the National Ambient Air Quality Standard—for ozone “smog” pollution. EPA has selected Houston as one of only 3 places in the nation where they are actively listening to public opinion about this move. If EPA strengthens that standard, Houston’s air will get much, much cleaner making it a healthier place to live. But opponents are weighing in with the same tired arguments. We want to share the facts with you at a press conference the day of the hearing.

Come learn more about why the EPA decided to “do over” the decision they reached in 2008 and now proposes a tighter national air quality standard. Come learn why the stories you are hearing from opponents are wrong.

For more Information, Contact: Eva Hernandez, Sierra Club, 512-299-1550, Chris Smith, Environmental Defense Fund, 512-659-9264, Susannah Fuchs, American Lung Association, 314-645-5505 ext 1007, or Matthew Tejada, Galveston-Houston Association for Smog Prevention, 713-528-3779
