North Deer Island designated a “Global Important Bird Area.

North Deer Island was designated a Global Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society and BirdLifeInternational. Houston Audubon is a co-owner in this 144-acre island along with Audubon Texas and six additional undivided interest owners. (more…)

RDA Announces Winners.

Rice Design Alliance (RDA) is pleased to announce the winners of its tenth annual grants program, Initiatives for Houston. The grant program focuses on projects that support Houston’s built environment. RDA will award a total of $10,350 for the three proposals the jury selected. Winning proposals are from Texas Southern University graduate students Darren Preacely and Sharon Adams, Rice University student Tracy Catherine Bremer, University of Houston College of Architecture students Jessica Lauren Barnett, Rafael Morales, Maria Gabriela Oran, and Allison Parrott.   1. Armand Bayou Nature Center seeks Restoration Technician. The focus of this position will be prairie restoration through invasive species removal.  As the summer progresses, interns will gain experience in plant identification and propagation, and wetland restoration.  Interns will also assist with supervision of volunteer work crews. Lester Brown, President, Earth Policy Institute, helped pioneer the concept of sustainability by creating the first research institute devoted to analyzing environmental issues on a global basis, Worldwatch Institute. More recently, he founded Earth Policy Institute to show what sustainable economies look like and how to get there. The Telegraph of Calcutta called him “the guru of the environmental movement.” He’s been honored with a MacArthur “genius” Fellowship, he’s published 50 books translated into over 40 languages, and his latest is Plan B 3.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization.

Patron Seats at $74 includes a private green room reception with the speaker, complimentary autographed book, and center-front seating. Discounts of 10% (excepting patron seats) are available for students, seniors 65 and over, groups of 10 or more, and educators.

Good news on electronic waste recycling! Because of state legislation passed in 2007 (House Bill 2714) that came into full force on September 1, 2008, all companies selling computers in Texas must offer free and convenient recycling of their old computer equipment. (more…)
