PINEY WOODS WILDLIFE SOCIETY – MARCH MONTHLY MEETING – CARNIVOROUS PLANTS
Date: Tue, Mar 20
Time: 7 – 7:30 pm Social, 7:30 – 9 pm Program
Location: Mercer Arboretum, 22306 Aldine Westfield Road
Fee: Free
Contact: (281) 443-8731

Complete Description:
Speaker: Mike Howlett
Topic: Carnivorous Plants
Carnivorous plants derive some or most of their nutrients from trapping and consuming prey – usually insects and other arthrpods. Therefore, they are sometimes referred to as insectivorous plants. These plants grow in areas where the soil is poor in nutrients, especially nitrogen, such as acidic bogs. There are two major types of carnivorous plants, those with active traps, such as Venus flytraps, and those with passive traps, such as pitcher plants or sundews. Please join us for Mike’s presentation on the remarkable carnivorous plants.
Mike Howlett is a naturalist at Jesse H. Jones Park, where he has worked for over ten years. Mike is a member of the International Carnivorous Plant Society. In addition to his interest in carnivorous plants, Mike also owns and runs Houston Herpetological Supply, through which he sells reptiles and supplies. He also volunteers for the Texas Master Naturalist program.

Ornithology Group March Field Trip – Bolivar Peninsula and Texas City

Posted on Wednesday 28 February 2007

ORNITHOLOGY GROUP MARCH FIELD TRIP – BOLIVAR PENINSULA AND TEXAS CITY
Date: Sat, Mar 17
Time: Meet at 8 am
Location: Meet at the Bolivar side of the Ferry Landing Parking Lot on Bolivar Peninsula at 8 am
Fee: none
Contact: Adam Wood at (713) 515-1692 or birdman_570@yahoo.com

Complete Description:
This month’s trip will be to Bolivar and the Texas City Dike. We will be assisting Tom Kihn and Johnnie Greene with the monthly Bolivar bird survey for the first part of the trip. If you want to contribute your birding experience and skills for the purchase and preservation of habitat on Bolivar – here is your chance. The last year-long survey of the flats was conducted in 1982. Dollars plus current bird data are needed by us to complete our campaign to preserve Bolivar habitat. Many eyes are needed to spot, identify, and count the many birds using Bolivar habitat. We are conducting a monthly bird survey of the Bolivar Peninsula to document the number of species and individuals that feed, rest, and nest on the western end of Bolivar, from Retillion Road to the Ferry landing, including all land areas. The survey uses Christmas Bird Count protocol and volunteers, like the Christmas Bird Counts, but no fee is required.
Donations for the Bolivar Peninsula will, of course, be accepted. Then we will head over to the Texas City Dike if the ferry line is manageable, and it is not we will go to Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge for the afternoon. You will be led by Tom Kihn, Johnnie Greene, or myself depending on the area in the survey area you prefer to bird. We will then all meet back up at around 11 at La Playita Mexican Restaurant for lunch (703 Madison, Pt. Bolivar), then depending on if birds of note were seen, we will head back to those places as a group to try and re-find those birds and find species missed during the survey. The main focus will be on shorebird identification on Bolivar Flats. However, we will also bird other areas along Bolivar in search of Whimbrel, Northern Gannet, and possibly Surf Scooter. After we are done birding Bolivar and depending on the ferry line, we will either bird Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge or the Texas City Dike. If we bird the Texas City Dike, we will be in search of Sprague’s Pipits, Eared Grebe, Common Goldeneye, American Golden Plover, Upland Sandpiper, and Buff-breasted Sandpiper. If time allows, we will go visit the hummingbird garden at Bay Street Park to see if there are any lingering overwintering hummingbirds as well as scope out the lake for more waterfowl and the banks for sparrows.
Be sure to bring: binoculars, spotting scope, a warm coat or jacket in case it is cold or windy, hat, sun block, camera, and water.
Directions: We will meet at the ferry parking lot on Bolivar Peninsula at 8 am. To get there from Houston, go south on I-45 south into Galveston. In Galveston, I-45 becomes Broadway. Take Broadway to basically where it deadends at the Gulf. Take a left at the light and follow the signs to the ferry which will be your second left.

Complete Description:
Speakers: John and Gloria Jones
Join John and Gloria Jones for a beautiful photographic tour of Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. John is an accomplished nature photographer and both John and Gloria are avid birdwatchers. Located along the Rio Grande River in the shelter of the Magdalena Mountains in central New Mexico, the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is a gigantic pantry for migrating and wintering birds. Each season, this refuge offers unique bird and wildlife viewing opportunities, but the winter season is by far the most popular. It is then that Bald Eagles and thousands of Snow Geese and Sandhill Cranes flock to the fields and marshes. What makes this place so special? Up to twenty thousand Snow Geese, two thousand Canada Geese, thirty thousand ducks of seventeen species, and fourteen thousand Sandhill Cranes help. But, it is the nearness of the wildlife and their high degree of visibility that really make it special. Bird and mammal species that ordinarily are shy and wary often seem to show little fear there, especially when viewed from your vehicle. A world-famous Festival of the Cranes is held every year the week before Thanksgiving with speakers, special tours, and arts and wildlife displays. If you are into nature festivals, this is a good one.

Join the Citizens League for Environmental Action Now (CLEAN) as we present a forum which will address the fast-tracking of coal fired power plants in Texas. Contrary to what some electric power companies and politicians are telling the public, we do not need dirty coal fired power plants to generate electrical power for our growing state. It is true, that our state’s energy needs are growing. In response, electric power companies supported by Governor Rick Perry have a quick and dirty solution: Build more coal fired power plants. Coal fired power plants are major sources for the dispersion of metals, such as arsenic and mercury, as well as radionuclides in the environment. In addition, these facilities emit aldehydes, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, ketones, polychlorinated dibenzodioxins, and furans. Governor Perry issued an executive order to fast-track power plant permits, while the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is not requiring the analyses of the cumulative pollution impacts of these proposed power plants on cities downwind. Join CLEAN as we present the facts on dirty coal, the fast-tracking of new power plants, and efforts to protect health and the environment for all Texans.
