A general overview of the various green building programs in the State of Texas will be shared to open the discussion and set the stage. Included within the broader topic will be a discussion of the fundamentals of energy efficient design and construction for hot and humid climates. There will also be a conversation about the advanced topics of enhancing indoor air quality, appropriate strategies for mechanical ventilation and durable and disaster resistant construction. One of the unique opportunities this program presents is the expertise of the Florida Solar Energy Center and its extensive experience. The presenters will also share in depth knowledge and experience from the DOE’s Building America case studies. Cultivate Green is pleased to offer Houston area residents the opportunity to explore and understand more of what sustainable housing can mean to you, your family, and the environment. Come to this workshop and increase your knowledge by gaining tactics that can help you to make decisions in your home and at work. People employed in home building, remodeling, and real estate as well as homeowners will benefit from this workshop.

Jerry Yudelson is a recognized green building and marketing expert. In order to keep the workshop interactive and increase value to attendees, we have elected to limit the audience to 100 people. The cost is $100 per person. We expect to sell out well before the event, so register now to insure your reservation. Attendees will receive a complete package of information to take away with them. Contact: RSVP to Holli Swick at (713) 226-7200 or holli.swick@tpl.org

Complete Description:
West Galveston Island is changing rapidly. Areas that were once characteristic of the West End – wide open spaces, broad views of prairies, wetlands, and water – are being replaced by the signs of a growing economy. The West Galveston Island Priorities Meeting is the chance for Galvestonians to weigh in on the priorities for the future of the West Galveston Island community. The Trust for Public Land is working with the City of Galveston and the Galveston Bay Estuary Program of TCEQ to conduct this project to develop strategies to retain the local character of the West End and preserve the cherished land and water resources that Galvestonians depend upon. At the October 28 Priorities Meeting, stakeholders will prioritize – vote on – the conservation issues earlier identified by stakeholders. Trust for Public Land began working with a local Technical Advisory Committee and a Coordinating Committee to define the criteria of the community’s conservation priorities, which are: (1) Protect Habitat, (2) Protect Shoreline, (3) Provide Drainage and Flood Management, (4) Preserve the Island’s Local Character, and (5) Provide Access and Connectivity for Public Recreation. The priorities will be modeled with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data to produce “greenprint” maps. The maps become part of a larger land conservation initiative that aims to meet community needs. The Trust for Public Land conserves land for people to enjoy as parks, gardens, and other natural places, ensuring livable communities for generations to come. In Texas, Trust for Public Land has conserved over 30,000 acres and more than 12,500 acres in the Houston/Galveston area, including the Sam Houston National Forest, Spring Gully, and Buffalo Bend.
