This camp runs from Monday, July 10 – Friday, July 14, 2006. For ages 6-7 years. Meet our snake with horns, our white alligator, and our other scaly friends. Houston Sierra Club – Downtown Bicycle Ride

On this tour, from our downtown starting point, we will explore portions of Houston’s inner city bike trail network. We will either ride to the east end including the Harrisburg Sunset Trail, which was created using an abandoned rail right of way, or we may ride the newly reconstructed and landscaped Buffalo Bayou bike trail downtown if that is open. Bring a helmet and bike lock. Reservations are required. Houston Audubon Society – Birding on Galveston Bay Boat Trip

Houston Audubon Society and the Galveston Historical Foundation have arranged to provide a three-hour excursion to North Deer Island in Galveston Bay to go birding once a month over the summer. Thousands of birds nest on the island, and an Audubon waterbird expert will accompany each trip to help identify the birds and explain their behavior.
Advance reservations are required for this event as space is limited.
Location, Directions & Parking: Meet at the Texas Seaport Museum at Pier 21 in downtown Galveston. Take I-45 to Galveston and stay on that road as it becomes Broadway. Turn left and follow the signs to the historic port of Galveston and the Texas Seaport Museum on the Strand. All-day parking for $5 is available within a block or two of the museum. More expensive parking is nearby.

Armand Bayou Nature Center – Moonlight Pontoon Boat Cruise

For ages 5 and up. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Nightlife on the bayou is a lively chorus of frog songs and owl calls. Some of the workers of the night shift include: raccoons, opposums, nutria, deer, owls, snakes, turtles, and alligators. Leave from Bay Area Park Boat Launch aboard the “Bayou Ranger” pontoon boat. RECORD NUMBER OF SEA TURTLE NESTS LOCATED

Kemp’s ridley sea turtles, which had a near brush with extinction, appear to be making a comeback. So far, 69 of their nests have been discovered along the Texas coast during this year’s nesting season, including five in Galveston County. (more…)
